There are dozens of books that can teach you how to draw manga, and just as many that talk about manga and its origins―1000 Ideas by 100 Manga Artists is the only book that treats manga as a philosophy to be explored. In its pages, 100 manga “philosophers”―artists, cartoonists, and illustrators who have been influenced by manga―are asked 20 questions about their work, career, and relationship with manga. Each artists chooses 10 questions to answer in both words and pictures.
Along with an abundance of illustrations, sketches, and photographs, find a limitless range of artistic styles, hidden humor, irony, and wisdom in replies to questions like:
- Where do the ideas for your drawings come from? How do you do your research?
- How do you make your drawings come to life?
- Who are your favorite illustrators? Are you trying to follow in their footsteps?
- What good habits should a comic illustrator have?
- Manga: Is it art?
- What advice would you give to a novice illustrator?
Whether you are a beginning manga artist looking for guidance, an established illustrator looking for new inspiration, or a manga fan who wants to learn about the craft and its artists, 1000 Ideas by 100 Manga Artists offers a rich resource.

This manga reference book is simply amazing! There are tons of ideas and pictures from some of the most accomplish manga artists out there. I remember giving this book a good browse whenever I was stuck on visualizing a concept. Furthermore, majority of the visuals are immersive and diverse. I highly recommend purchasing this book for referencing in general!

I love this book. While I am not a manga artist (I tend more towards “conventional” art), it is wonderful to see what other artists are doing and their processes. A lot of the artists in this book blur the line between “manga” and “traditional”, which is a wonderful way to show how similar it is to what people think of as “art”. I think this helps knock down the barriers that some people, me included, had against what they thought manga art was about. I really developed a respect and appreciation for the form and the artists. GREAT JOB!!Beautiful examples of artwork and excellent interviews with the artists!

If you are doing a thesis based on Manga or are interested to know the opinions of other illustrators in order to generate ideas, create better work or know what tools they use, and see what is out there in terms of manga and the mixing of manga with other art styles, then this book will definitely help you!

I had checked this book out from the library last year, and got to broaden my scope in Manga artists, so much so that I know have favorites and have come in contact with some of the artists in the book. I want to use this book to get their photograph in person and autographs and sketch for my collection.
